Historic Urban Landscape Workshop

This workshop is held by PAN-SUMATRA NETWORK FOR HERITAGE CONSERVATION (PANSUMNET), in cooperation with KALBU, PT Timah, Indonesia Diaspora The Netherlands Task Forve lIveable Cities, RCE, UI, MHC, JKPI, Pemda Bangka Barat.

Pasumnet is a Heritage movement in Sumatra started since 1998 with the establishment of Sumatra Heritage Trust in Medan, North Sumatra and Pan-Sumatra Network for Heritage Conservation or Pansumnet. There are 14 organizations joining Pansumnet as institutional partners, they are from Aceh, Medan, Nias, Padang, Bangka Belitung, Bengkulu, Jambi, Riau, Palembang andLampung. Pansumnet is the only regional network that exists in Indonesia and becomes an example for other regions.

Pansumnet organizes regional gatherings and trainings to maintain contacts and cooperation which i s normally also attended by heritage organizations from other areas in Indonesia and from neighborhood countries in Southeast Asia like Malaysia and Singapore.

The Pansumnet 2018 Gathering in Muntok, West Bangka Regency. It is an honour for muntok to be a host for this regular meeting. It is expected that this workshop could countribute significantly to the long term vision to save industrial heritage in Indonesia, including Muntok, as a former tin mining city, which has shown its passion and determination to preserve its history for its future.

HISTORY OF MUNTOK
The Bangka-Belitung Province is one of the seven newly developed provinces of a total of 34 provinces in Indonesia. The Bangka-Belitung province was founded on November 21, 2000 according to Act Number 27 in 2000. It is composed of two islands named Bangka and Belitung with six regencies and one municipality. West Bangka Regency is one of the regencies in Bangka Belitung which was founded according to Act Number 5 in 2003 on the Establishment of South Bangka Regency, East Bangka Regency, West Bangka Regency and East Belitung Regency.

West Bangka Regency is located towards the western end of Bangka Island. The total land area is ± 285.100,90 Ha with some small surrounding islands. It offers beautiful tropical sandy beaches, unique multi-cultural tradition and historical heritages that are potentially interesting tourism destinations. Muntok (well-known as Mentok) is the capital city of the regency. Geographically, it is located in a cape in western sea of Bangka Island which has been the voyage route from Bangka to Sumatra Island since the period of Sriwijaya Kingdom.

The town is famous of its historical heritage developed as a result of tin mining activities. The settlement pattern is classified into three clusters, following ethnic diversities including Malay, Chinese and former European cluster represented by various old buildings.
